How to Repair Chipped and Broken Tiles
Many homeowners use ceramic tiles in their home. Ceramic tile because isn’t just beautiful, it’s pretty sturdy, too. Ceramic tile is water, heat and scratch resistant and can also stand up well to everyday wear and tear. However, even the toughest things in life can get broken.
Ceramic tiles are made out of clay. They are fired at very high temperatures in a kiln. They can be unglazed, or glazed. Unglazed tiles are usually used outside, while glazed tiles are used inside the home. Sounds great, right? Well, what do you do when your beautiful tile gets chipped and broken?
1.Fill in the Tile's Chip or Crack
If the tile isn’t too badly damaged, you can try to fill in the chip or crack and then paint over it. You can buy tile epoxy or adhesive at most home improvement stores. Simply apply it to the crack, let it dry and then paint over it. However, be careful to match the color of your paint as close to the rest of your tile as you can.
2.Remove the Broken Tile
If the damage is too big to fill in, you can simply remove the tile entirely and put a new one in its place. First, you’ll have to get rid of the old tile. Place a cloth over it and shatter it with a hammer. You may want to wear protective goggles in case any errant tile pieces go flying. Clean the area where the tile used to be well. You may need to use a chisel to get the old tile pieces all out.
3.Reapply New Tile
Once the area is completely clean of debris, you can apply the new tile. Use a trowel to apply adhesive to the new tile piece. Try to coat the tile evenly. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for how long the tile should set to dry. Once the adhesive is dry, outline the new tile piece with grout. Once the grout has set, clean the area well. Again, it’s important to make sure that the new pieces match with the old. Try to match your new piece closely with the other tile pieces. Also, if you have used a colored grout, make sure that matches as well.
4.Hire a Tile Repair Professional
Depending on the extent of tile damage, you may want to consider bringing in a professional to repair your tile. If you are dealing with just one or two broken tiles, then you can probably do the repair work yourself. However, if a large amount of your tile is broken – say, because something heavy dropped on it – or if your tile work is very intricate, it’s best to call in a pro. Having your tiles professionally installed and replaced means they’ll last longer because the work was done by someone with experience. Also, many professionals offer warranties on their work – so if something goes wrong they’ll fix it at little or no charge.
There is a reason why people have been using tile in their homes since ancient Roman times – it’s durable and attractive. However, broken tile is ugly and can even be a safety hazard. Move quickly to repair broken or chipped tile – you’ll be glad you did.
