Decorating a child’s bedroom can be an enjoyable, yet challenging, task. It’s important to make sure that you consider special interests and personality traits as you plan the bedroom décor. This attention to detail will help make the bedroom uniquely suited to your child. A boy who likes football or bugs would love special design elements that incorporate these interests.

  1. 1.Consider Your Son

Before you do anything, stop and think about your son to determine the best way to proceed. Your son’s age and interests will play a big part in the décor and design you choose for his bedroom. If your son is very young, most of the decisions will be yours as you plan the decorating theme and style. If your son is old enough to have opinions and desires about his bedroom, it’s important to involve him in the decorating decisions. Be realistic about the décor you select, also. Choosing a puppy dog theme for a 4-year-old will probably not stay relevant and popular with your son as he grows. You’ll probably be redecorating his room with a more mature style by the time he’s 7 or 8 years old.

  2. 2.Common Boy Themes

Boy’s bedroom themes abound, with many different options according to your son’s interests. Some of the themes that work well in boy bedrooms include transportation, jungle animals, sports, primary colors, ocean animals, nature, nautical, puppies, space and insects. Once you choose a theme, it’s time to flesh it out and consider all of the different ways you can incorporate the theme into the bedroom décor. Depending on your budget, you may get extremely creative and elaborate with the theme or you may opt to keep the décor sedate and simple. If you want to decorate your son’s room in a way that will last throughout childhood without needing to redo it as he grows, choose a generic color scheme for the walls and floor. You can update the window coverings and bedding as your son grows without having to redo the foundation of the bedroom’s décor.

  3. 3.Walls

The walls of the bedroom are one of the main places to incorporate and showcase the theme. The eye naturally travels to the walls first upon entering a room, so make the theme pop on the walls. Use paint in a variety of ways. Create a chair rail effect by dividing the walls into two parts. The area below the chair rail could be a solid color or it could be vertical stripes using two or more colors. Above the chair rail, the options are almost limitless. Use a base paint color on the wall and then add decals to pick up the theme of the room – transportation, animals or sports images, perhaps. You could also paint a mural over the entire wall to make the theme come alive. For a jungle scene, the mural might include trees, monkeys swinging on vines, birds and snakes hanging on branches. Add a wallpaper border that fits the bedroom theme at the chair rail point to divide the bottom and top areas of the wall.

  4.
  5. 4.Floor

An area rug on the floor is another effective way to make a bedroom theme become vivid in the room. For example, in a bedroom with a transportation theme, the area rug might have roads and train tracks that would enable your son to run his cars over the rug to play. For a jungle theme, the rug might have a variety of animals on a bright background. Another option would be to find an area rug that picks up whatever colors you’re using in the room. If the bedroom floor does not have a hard surface, the carpeting could be a neutral or coordinating color that fits with the other colors of the room.

  6. 5.Furniture

The furniture for the room depends on the age of your son and the space in the bedroom. A simple twin-size bed would be the obvious choice for a young boy and a double bed would be more suitable for an older boy. Accessorizing the bed to fit the theme can be a fun way to incorporate the bed into the bedroom. For example, a car bed frame might be the perfect addition to a transportation theme bedroom. Add a matching dresser, desk and chair and the bedroom furniture ensemble is complete.

  7. 6.Accessories

The accessories of a bedroom are where the room’s theme comes alive. The pictures and themed décor you hang on the walls will add to the overall theme of the room. Curtains can add to the theme as well with the fabrics you select. Mount shelves on the walls and fill them with toys that fit the theme. For example, a nautical themed bedroom might have various boats, ships and island knickknacks on the shelves on the walls. By choosing a variety of toys that fit the bedroom’s theme, you add instant décor to the bedroom, as well as providing your son with toys that he will enjoy using. Add bedding to the room that complements the bedroom theme also. A bedspread, sheets, bed skirt and pillows will add to the overall feeling of the bedroom. Many throw pillows come in shapes and designs to fit a bedroom theme. Stuffed animals on the bed will also fit many bedroom themes – monkeys and other jungle animals for a jungle bedroom theme or fish and other ocean animals for an ocean theme, for example.

By spending some time and effort decorating your son’s bedroom, you can help create a space he’ll enjoy and feel comfortable in. The bedroom should be a spot where he can relax, rest and spend positive time rejuvenating for the next day. Kids need this rejuvenation time just as much as adults need it.
