5 Essential Tools for Drywall Repair

As a home owner you work hard to maintain your home and to keep it in top shape. For this you are willing to invest both time and money. While it is essential for every home owner to learn the basics of home maintenance and repair and own the tools necessary to fix minor damage to the home, many people are unaware of the tools they will need to fix a damaged drywall.

It is always cheaper to repair small holes and dents to the drywall than changing the entire wall. Moreover, timely repair can prevent the need for more extensive repairs later on.

Before you can begin to repair the holes and dents on your drywall, you need to ensure that you have all the necessary tools and material to complete the job. While the tools and material you need will depend on the size of the dent or hole, some tools are essential whatever the damage.

  1. 1.Drywall Knife

A timely repair can prevent the need for more extensive repairs later on.

This is also called exacto knife or razor knife. It is used to cut the drywall sheets or sheetrock. If you plan to patch up a dent on your drywall using sheetrock, then you will need this knife to cut the sheetrock to the desired size. The blade can be replaced when it becomes dull.

  2. 2.Manual Sanding Tools

After the drywall compound has been applied to the desired thickness and it has dried, you will need to sand the surface before it can be painted on. For this you will need basic manual sanding tools such as sand paper. Before you can paint over the patched section of the drywall, you will need to sand it to a smooth finish so that the paint will adhere properly.

  3. 3.Putty Knives

Whether the hole is small or large, you will need putty knives to apply the drywall compound to them. These come in various sizes but for home repair work 6 and 8 inch knives should be sufficient. These knives ensure that you are in a position to apply the drywall compound smoothly and evenly over the hole or dent you aim to cover. Unless you use one of these knives to apply the drywall compound, you will end up filling the dent with a lump of drywall compound that stands out from the rest of the wall and spoils the appearance of your home. Unless the patch is applied properly, the spot will be easily identifiable for years to come. If you are not willing to invest in a set of tools for this work or do not have the time or inclination to repair the dry wall yourself, retain the services of an expert drywall repair provider who can be found online if no one you know can offer you a decent referral.

  4. 4.Safety Tools

Drywall compound that is sanded can release dust that can harm the lungs or irritate the eyes. A common cotton dust mask and goggles will ensure that both the lungs and eyes are protected. Some people are more sensitive to the dust released by sanded drywall compounds. Such people should invest in special masks to ensure that they stay safe.

  5. 5.Pans

The drywall compound has to be mixed and held before it can be applied to the hole or dent. You will need pans for these. For this you can use pans that you have used for other construction projects. The size of the pans depends on the size of the dent you want to cover. Larger dents require more compound to be mixed and, therefore, require larger pans.

While it is possible for a home owner to fix damaged drywalls themselves, larger dents require special skills and tools. Unless the appropriate tools are used and the compound is applied properly, the result can be an unsightly drywall and room. Only the right tools and skills can provide the desired finish after the repair of the drywall. Moreover, before deciding to fix the drywall, you need to obtain safety gear as well, since dust from the drywall can harm anyone’s lungs and eyes.
